A Health & Safety Advisor is required to work on road maintenance projects. Based in Galway.

Your new company

Your new company is involved in the construction and maintenance of roads across Ireland. They are now seeking to recruit a Health & Safety Advisor. Reporting to the Group Health & Safety Manager, you will be looking after the Health and Safety function, ensuring the company is compliant with all legal aspects of Health and Safety. This will include establishing and communicating policies to other employees and line managers to create and maintain a safe workplace and implementing a continuous improvement philosophy for the company. As a safety advisor, you must have excellent attention to detail to identify hazards. This role will include dealing with our subcontractors to ensure they meet and adhere to the company safety standards. The company provides specialist maintenance services across the island of Ireland, on all road categories during both day and night shifts. The successful applicant will be expected to be available for site visits and scheduled auditing in support of these operations. A significant portion of time will be spent on site or travelling between sites. Applicants must have a full driving licence and currently hold legal authorisation to work in Ireland. The role is not anticipated to include any hybrid hours.

Responsibilities
Health and Safety Culture
  • Develop, implement, and monitor the safety program to ensure compliance with all applicable government regulations and comply with technical standards.
  • Build relationships with all parties for the implementation of Safe T Cert/ ISO 45001 management systems
  • Liaise with contracting team to promote change management, legal compliance, behavioural-based safety, and a continual improvement approach
  • Undertake scheduled Site Audit Inspections and communicate the results of site inspections to site managers and to the company Health and Safety Manager and to identify risks and opportunities for improvement
  • To deliver safety presentations to staff and or customers, induction training, toolbox talks and any other training as necessary.
  • Monitoring legislative compliance and communication of requirements and upcoming changes to ensure compliance
  • To prepare any reports as required, accident investigation, audit reports, management reviews
  • Preparation and delivery of Management Review packages for ISO Management Systems
  • To identify and address site safety issues and observations and report to the senior management team
  • Deliver safety related training/induction to staff, contractors and subcontractors
  • Support the accident and incident reporting structure in accordance with Company Policy and to take an active part in accident investigation, root cause analysis and the corrective and preventive action management
  • Deliver and complete any statutory notifications to the H.S.A in line with the Construction Regulations and associated Project safety construction plans, Risk assessment and method statements
  • To act as company representative at project meetings, safety meetings as necessary
  • Conduct toolbox talks, communicate method statements, and risk assessment as required
  • Manage and coordinate hazard identification and Risk Assessment, chemical risk assessment, machinery and maintenance programs alongside area managers
  • Actively take part and assist in the coordination of Health & Safety awareness activities, including annual seminar, safety communications meetings, Global safety week, safety promotions, notice boards, Group meetings and events
  • Review & update, Health & Safety documents, including Health & Safety Procedures, Safety Statement, Risk Assessment etc.
  • Responsible for providing advice, monitoring & recording compliance & non-compliance on HEALTH & SAFETY matters on all business issues
  • Planning frequent HEALTH & SAFETY inspections & audits, ensuring coverage of all activities and in line with company protocols
  • Systematically recording & maintaining HEALTH & SAFETY inspection & audit reports on company server
  • Health and Safety performance goals in consultation with Group Health & Safety Manager
  • Tracking of non-compliant issues, observations, accidents and near-miss reporting
  • Completion of Audit Schedule and tracking audit actions
  • Accident investigation and Corrective Action Plan
Education
  • Degree or equivalent qualification. (Occupational Safety and Health, Construction, Engineering is desirable)
  • Professionally qualified - minimum Level 7 / Diploma or Equivalent
  • Managing Safely in Construction is desirable
  • Experienced in Auditing (and/or Safe T Cert)
  • Working knowledge of SHWWA 2005 and associated Legislation
  • Microsoft Office skills including, Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint
  • Good knowledge of data analysis and risk assessment

Experience
  • More than 3 years’ experience of Safety & Health in quarrying, road maintenance, construction, or related industries
  • Experience in dealing with representatives of Regulators
  • Good communication, leadership and teamwork skills, working at all levels in the organisation.

  • Willing to be flexible in their schedule to accommodate night shifts
